Conditions secondary to TMJ dysfunction

If the VA already service-connected your tmj dysfunction (also called TMJ, TMD, temporomandibular joint, jaw pain), it can cause or worsen other conditions that are ratable on their own. These "secondary" claims are where many veterans leave money on the table. Below is what a service-connected tmj dysfunction commonly leads to, why, and what evidence each one takes.

Secondary conditions to consider

A secondary claim only works if the primary condition (tmj dysfunction) is already service-connected, and you have a nexus — a doctor's opinion that it is "at least as likely as not" the cause. More on nexus letters →

Chronic headachesmoderate link

Jaw-joint dysfunction and clenching are a well-recognized trigger for tension and migraine-type headaches.

What you'd need: A headache diagnosis, a frequency/severity log, and a nexus opinion tying them to the TMJ condition.

Typically rated under DC 8100 migraine/headaches (38 CFR 4.124a)

Damaged/worn teethmoderate link

Chronic grinding (bruxism) fractures and wears teeth. Note VA rates most dental conditions for treatment eligibility rather than compensation, but the link is worth documenting.

What you'd need: Dental records showing the damage and a note connecting it to bruxism/TMJ.

Typically rated under DC 9905 temporomandibular disorder (38 CFR 4.150)
